The books were set up in columns SO lofty that the topmost volumes were always lurching as though medi tating to take headers on to the carpet, but not daring because Of the height; and as, when M. Grachard wanted a book, it was his custom to pull it out Of the pile without taking the trouble to lift those above it, the ruins Of broken columns were to be seen in every direction. It was impossible to enter the room in the dark without knocking something over, and unsafe to leave it with a fire or light burning therein, lest some Of the papers scattered about the floor should set first the room and then the house into a blaze.
