But the duty of the historical critic is, on the contrary, to restrict the part played in his work by conjecture within the severest limits, and to seek out, select, and use his documents in sufficient numbers to enable him, with their help alone, to trace the succession of events, and that in the orderly sequence indispensable to the interest inspired by any literary composition.
