17th c. courtesan
Though ostensibly the story of Hortense Mancini, it includes parts of the lives of her sisters. During a time when women were used as property to cement political relationships, these women ventured off on their own, in a manner of speaking. They took lovers as their husbands took mistresses and allegedly in a couple of instances had lesbian lovers. In the style of courtesans of the 18th and 19th century, these intelligent women hosted salons and developed relationships with intellectuals of the day.
