This was my first time reading Mr. Gardner's work and I was impressed. I have just finished the first book and was eager to start the second, only to discover the books are no longer in print. I managed to find copies online so will now be watching my mailbox with childlike anticipation.
I love how the author develops his characters. He took a group of suburban neighbors and placed them in a fantasy world where everyone seems to be battling everyone else for reasons ranging from overall control to basic survival. None of the characters are perfect and we soon see that each has their share of flaws. Even Nunn, the evil wizard, isn't all powerful. The book has revealed he has his own weaknesses. Obar is the good wizard but there are times when you wonder if he's just the lesser of two evils. No one comes to this world without being changed and we've seen hints of things to come with Charlie the dog, Nick and his sword, Jason and the leaf from his head and Mrs. Smith's abilities, to name a few. Overall this book was well written and I would highly recommend it. So much so that I keep checking my mailbox, again and again. I cannot wait to read the next book!
