One of the great pleasures in life for me is to discover a fine writer of whom I was previously unaware. I first heard of Joceleyn Brooke from a letter to a newspaper in which the writer complained that there were several English authors since the 2nd World War who had been undeservedly banished to obscurity, and whose work was now out of print. Brooke was particularly recommended; I began with "The Orchid Trilogy", which I thoroughly enjoyed, then had to search for this book on the internet, finally getting a copy from the USA. Both these works are really autobiography, and cover similar ground, but the author also reflects on life, beliefs, other authors and so on. His travel writing is some of the most vivid I have read., and he also creates a beautiful, nostalgic picture of childhood. Highly recommended.
