Now, though it be so, that shortness of prayer be highly commended in this place, yet I give thee to understand withal, that oftness of prayer is not thereby forbidden; for, (as it is said before) this kind of prayer is made in the length of the spirit, so that it may never cease until the time come that a soul have obtained the thing that it longed after. Example of this may we take in a man or woman being put in such a great fear in such sort as I showed before, for we see that a man or woman being in such a plight crieth out, "Fire, fire, help, help," or some other like little word; and they cry not only once or twice, but continually, and never cease crying, until they have gotten some help and comfort. That in the time of this Work the Soul is not to regard, or think of, any one Special Vice in itself, or any one Special Virtue in itself. The Fortieth Chapter. T0 thou, after the same manner, fill S thy spirit with a ghostly meaning of this word sin, and without any special regard of any kind of sin, venial, or deadly, this or that. Cast not whether it be pride, or ire, covetousness, or sloth, gluttony or letchery. To be short, regard not what kind, or quality, it be, for to the contemplative person it skilleth not what sin it be, nor how great it be, for all sin is to them alike great, (I mean in the time of this work;) for so much as the least sin separateth them from God, and hindereth their spiritual peace and rest. Thou must have such an estimate of sin, that thou feel it to be a lump thou wotest not what; but surely none other thing but only thine own self.
