Michael Augustine Corrigan was the last Roman Catholic bishop of Newark to have all of New Jersey as his diocese. He was president of Seton Hall College when he assumed the bishopric at age 33 in 1873. In his journal he reported on the conditions of the parishes but the entries also contain informative accounts and observations of people and places that he encountered on his travels.
