The true story of Grace Darling is a remarkable one. She lived in Longstone Lighthouse on Longstone Island, which is one of the Farne Islands, off the coast of North East England. On 7th September 1838 she spotted a shipwreck against one of the neighbouring rocky Islands. She persuaded her father to go with her to try and rescue the people trapped, and clinging to the rock in dangerous stormy seas. She and her father set off in their small rowing boat, risking their lives, and managed to rescue nine people from the rocks and took them back to safety to the lighthouse, where they needed to remain for a further three days due to the stormy weather. Grace was viewed as a heroine, as such a young woman, only 22 years of age, had great courage and strength, and was awarded gold and silver medals for her bravery. She died sadly just a few years later, and many a story has been written about her life. This book offers a new perspective, in that it is written in the first person as a diary. The author has researched her life at length, and wanted to breathe life into the heroine, and view the disaster as how she experienced it and the aftermath of fame she had to deal with. So this work of fiction presented in a diary is based on the true story of Grace Darling.
