Not illustrated. 1916 Excerpt: ...a shelf of the fashionable romances which fascinated Lydia Languish. They are usually handy little duodecimos published in London or Dublin. They were cheap, about two shillings a volume, and the titles were attractive: The False Step, The Unguarded Moment, The Fatal Compliance, The Innocent Adultery. They usually dealt with fashionable life and unlawful love. With very few exceptions, they reached a pitch of dullness that the mind of man can hardly conceive. Amongst the exceptions was Fanny Burney's Evelina, or a Young Lady's Entrance into the World, the success of which set a thousand ardent pens at work. Evelina is readable to this day. One of its chief rivals in 1778 was The Sylph, which was credited to a far more important person than the music-master's daughter in Leicester Square. In January, 1779, Fanny Burney was invited to spend an evening with Mrs. Cholmondeley1 in Hertford Street, "perhaps the most important evening of my life," she entered in her journal. Mrs. Cholmondeley, a lady of fashion, had been educated in France, and was " gay, flighty, entertaining, and frisky." Miss Burney had recently published Evelina, and was on view as a literary phenomenon. Into the drawing-room at Hertford Street marched many of the most interesting men and women of the day. Mrs. Sheridan, whose beauty, according to Miss Burney, was only equalled 1 Mrs. Cholmondeley was a member of the Devonshire House circle. Sir Gilbert Elliot (afterwards first Earl of Minto) met her in 1787. "On Saturday I dined at the Palmerstons'....
