?The Devil?s Candy? is the illuminating story that came about when Julie Salamon, film critic for the Wall Street Journal, was invited behind the scenes to make note of the casting and production of Brian De Palma?s film adaptation of Tom Wolfe?s novel ?Bonfire of the Vanities?.
The book takes us from the early casting sessions with Uma Thurman and Tom Hanks with Brian De Palma, through the location scouting, shooting and post-production of the Warner Brothers 50 Million dollar flop that at the time was the biggest Hollywood flop of all time (right up there with ?Heaven?s Gate?!).
The book stands as a testament to the excessive abuse of studio film money being thrown at a project in the belief that it will ?create? a better picture- the book shows that without creative originality, more money allows nothing more that a higher budget and eventually waste of time and talent.
Little things stand out and are humorous in Salamon?s excellent book: Brian De Palma considers John Cleese for the narrator of the film but rejects him eventually because he believe that the voice should be distinctly American- so he chose Bruce Willis; after shooting many establishing early scenes, and a 3-week period of time off, Melanie Griffith appears on the set with breast enlargements that she got to please her husband-at-the-time Don Johnson.
The book also list other things like De Palma?s bet with his first Assistant Director that he could not get a one-shot of a jet plane landing with the setting sun behind it (a little something to keep them entertained while they spent the Studios Money); De Palma?s own isolation from his crew, cast, and peers, and his equal genius at creating truly enthralling pictures albeit wholly misguided given the satiric nature of Wolfe?s book.
I don?t want to give too much away here, but if you really love the minutia of the ?business? and all the dirty secrets, the really true rumors, Julie Salamon?s book is a comprehensive detailed study of one big mess of a major studio and the making of ?Bonfire of the Vanities?.
Overall, the film is a rich visual experience and Salamon?s book tells a compelling and enlightening tale. If you?re into it, you?ll get plenty of the real dope here. It would have been better to accompany the text with many more photos but the text gives plenty of good stuff.
