About a year after their arrival at Surat, there was trouble with a kind of local Mahdi in Mandavi, and among the force sent out to suppress him were four troops of the 17th under Major Supple, who reached the insurgent village (Burhodun?) at dawn on the 19 th January. The fanatics, assembled on the plain before the village, declined to surrender their leader, who masqueraded as an earthly embodiment of Adam and Christ, and various other Biblical personages, and yelled defiance at the 17th, who made a feint attack, which only provoked more derision and clouds of dust. The Dragoons then went in with a will, sabre v. spear, and axes fixed to a 12-foot bamboo shaft, and any amount of wild religious fury. We had to kill 200 of them before they sought shelter in their village, and even then they were game to the last against our infantry and guns, which had come up in the meantime. The 17th eventually burned them out, but the regimental loss was heavy: a corporal and two privates killed; every officer with the detachment and several privates and many horses wounded, Lieutenant Adams' helmet being cut to pieces on his head. On the 11th of the same month, a detachment under Lieutenant Charles Johnson had sailed from Bombay for Persia, to escort Sir John Malcolm's mission to that court, whither he was going to secure Persia's aid against any Russian or French attempt on the North-West. They rejoined in December, and Sir John Malcolm sent a letter to Lieut.-Colonel Evan Lloyd, quoted at length in Cannon.
