Beware Meteor Showers!
TITLE: The Day Of The Triffids
GENRE: SciFi, Alien Monster, present day(1962)
CAST: Howard Keel, Nicole Maurey, Janette Scott, Kieron Moore, Alison Leggatt and Mervyn Johns
PLOT: A prior Meteor shower has deposited spores of a plant/animal hybrid around the globe at some time prior to the events of the film. A second shower brings a dazzling display of lights which has a spectrum that accomplishes two things: everyone who watched it went blind and all those spores are awakened by that particular color and intensity of light. Scientists on a lighthouse island try to find a way to kill it. On land all hell breaks loose and many of the remaining sighted individuals gather together to save civilization.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 7 of 10; There are many disappointing aspects to this tale which has a premise that should score well.(two monsters to battle, a blind world and man-eating plants) But... Keel, a nautical merchant marine and sighted, in England hears on the radio that survivors are gathering in France. Meanwhile a professor on sabatical on a lighthouse island and his wife begin to study the creature to find a weakness (which they eventually do) When Keel does his boat ride to France, no lighthouse. Then Keel hears that a rescue attempt will be made by American submarines from southern Spain's port of Cadiz (He right here should stop listening to the radio) okay, boats again, but no trip to the lighthouse and the movie ends. Boo, save the scientist & wife with the solution first!
DVD BONUS: This movie was digitized by an outfit called cheezy flicks and they throw in a few trailers for other movies they have done plus the trailer for this movie.
ADDED NOTES: It is sad to see this, the beginning of the non singing side of one of Hollywood's leading tenors, Keel. He did a few more low budget flicks but then went on to have a ten year continuing role in the hit TV series Dallas. And Janette Scott' (Mel Torme's Ex)'s role as the lighthouse lady is a mentioned character in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".
