One has to understand the general theme of John Shannon's writings to truly appreciate his latest novel. He has an intuitive feeling for southern California, particularly its changing socio-economic dynamics, that is conveyed in this, and all, his novels. This work, in particular, is disturbing in the context of certain civil-liberty infringements at the Federal level. On the surface, the elements of the novel in the beginning would not seem to be ripe for blending, yet it all makes sense in the end. In all, a very satisfying read.
