The Dark Crystal is an epic fantasy and adventure film created by renowned puppeteer Jim Henson. All characters in this film are puppets and there are no human characters in this visually stunning movie. The film fits the traditional hero's quest genre that one would see in Greek mythology (the Twelve Labors of Hercules, Jason and the Golden Fleece) or Arthurian literature. Though made in 1982 it has great relevance from a cinematic perspective and has stood the test of time (especially in an age of computer generated images and characters so common in current movies). The themes of courage and sacrifice are well developed as well as the concept of good versus evil. I recently saw this movie during a special showing in the theaters and really enjoyed it. It is not too scary but some of the characters are ugly and might be a little frightening for young children. Still, this is a family friendly film about heroism and unselfishness.

Renewal of Childhood Movietime
Recently, I began collecting movies for my own future children that were a part of my own happy childhood. The Dark Crystal was one movie that stood out for the years to come in my memory, and maybe a bit too long on my familie's list of unethical movies for children.
Thanks for the fabulous copy!

A Very Bright Object This...
TITLE: The Dark Crystal
GENRE: Fantasy puppet alien world
CAST:(Lead Puppeteers) Jim Henson, Frank Oz and Kathryn Mullen
PLOT: A race did a little too much experimenting on a giant magical crystal which resulted in the splitting of the individuals into two distinct species. The bad guys kept control of the device which had broken but still functioned incompletely. The good guys were kicked out to the wilderness to try and save the rest of the world's beings. At a conjunction of the planet's three stars, the crystal needs to be made whole again. The hero, an elfin type of creature and his found female counterpart, try to complete the saving of the world.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 9.5 of 10; This has the best puppeteers, the best costumes. a great dialogue and character development that arose from 5 years of development. Forget all that, this is a kid's fantasy and one of the best ever concieved and executed.
DVD BONUS: A one hour "the Making of..." documentary. A lot of story board, and some deleted scenes and reworked scenes.
ADDED NOTES: Even adults will be lost in the imaginative world created by Henson and Oz and forget they are watching puppets and not live alien beings. A sequel is said to be being released in 2011! Can't wait.
