Seller's Description:
Near Fine in Near Fine jacket. 9.1 x 6.6 x 1.1 inches. pp. 236. Clean, tight, unmarked. Jacket lightly toned at spine, with light edge wear. Detailed study of German settlements in Russia, which began as early as the Thirty Years War, greatly increasing after 1763 when Catherine II encouraged European settlers to come to Russia. Many Russian Germans began emigrating to the United States after 1871, when Alexander II began Russification of the German settlements and universal military service loomed. Russian Germans found their way to Nebraska and the Dakotas, as well as Kansas and other states. The basis of the book is a 1916 doctoral thesis by Hattie Plum Williams, who researched the subject at twenty-four archives in Germany (listed in the bibliographic notes). The editors themselves are descendants of the Volga Germans. 50 illustrations and double-page endpaper map of European Russia in 1773. // Shipped carefully packed in a sturdy box.
