William Donohue Ellis' book is a mildly quirky, but tremendously informative book about the Cuyahoga River. In a manner parallel to that in which the Cuyahoga defines Northeast Ohio, Ellis uses the river as the unifying theme in his study of the history of the northeastern quadrant of the state and manages to provide his reader with a large number of interesting and generally little-known facts about the geography and history of the region. For instance, how many NE Ohioans know that the Cuyahoga was once the western boundary of the United States? Ellis provides an in-depth history of the Western Reserve and explains how many of the present-day features of the area came to be. His style, while occasionally quirky, always manages to hold the reader's interest. This book, which is part of a series entitled "Rivers of America," is a must-read for anyone interested in regional history.
