American academia has a lot of stuffed shirts in Russian studies. Bruce Lincoln is the first author I've read in English who treats the Russian people after the 1917 revolution not as subjects under a microscope, but as human beings capable of pity, emapathy, greed, outrage and other emotions. Mr. Lincoln's works should be a cornerstone in the library of any reader of English interested in the Russian lands and their people.
