Excerpt from The Confession of Faith, of the Church of Christ in Peacham, Defended: A Sermon, Delivered at Peacham, Lord's Day, September 14, 1817 IT must always be suitable, and important, for professors of religion to examine, frequently and carefully, into the founds tion, on which they rest their hopes, for acceptance with God, and eternal blessedness; and to endeavor to ascertain whether they are building on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Je sus Christ himself being the chief corner stone 5 that foundo tion of God, which standeth sure or whether they are build log on some other foundation, which cannot abide the trial. Nor is this a matter. Which is really less important to those, who do not, than it is to those, who do, profess to be christians; since the way of salvation is precisely the same for them, that it is for pro fessors; and it must be of the same importance to them, to know what they must believe, and what they must be, that they may be saved. It is the more important that this subject should receive careful attention, because there is some disagreement, in the opin ions of christians, concerning what is necessary to be believed. There is, usually, some disposition to cry, Lo, here, and, Lo there; and efforts are too commonly made, to divert the minds of those, who are inquiring what they must do to be saved, from subjects of primary importance, to some controverted questions, which, in comparison, are scarcely of any importance at all. This always looks to me like a stratagem of Satan, to lead men astray; as be well knows, that, if christians can be drawn into disputes, about nonessential things, they will not make much progress in the way to heaven; and that, while the attention of sinners can be fixed on such things, he is in little danger of losing his in uence over thetm Because.
