His father was David Clark, a relative of Abraham Clark, whose name appears among the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He was a warm Whig, and his property was sacrificed, and his life brought into jeopardy often,1n consequence of his patriotic exertions. In reference to these trying scenes, the subject of this memoir was accustomed to say, that he was cradled in a whirlwind. His mother, Elizabeth Moore, was a mother in Israel. She seems to have been a woman of great strength and decision of character. She was remarkable for plain dealing and Christian faithfulness toward her children, and those under her care it was a some what austere and uncompromising faithfulness, partaking of an age of more rigid authority than our own. She was alone in her efforts for the religious training and the eternal welfare of her children, for the father did not exert any religious in uence. Perhaps this double share of responsibility weighed so heavy, as to induce a double vigilance and energy in her own spirit, for the saving of her house. The following is his Own language, descriptive of her in uence over himself. A child Of prayer, he knew a mother's worth, Knew well the silken cords she.
