Although this book only extends up till 1968, it is by far the best book I've ever read on automobile history. It contains many pages of beautiful color plates of fully-restored antique autos in the beginning, followed by the most comprehensive compendium of automobile makes and their histories that I've ever read....ANYWHERE. The only drawback that I have found, being from the USA, is that all of the engine displacement measurements are metric, and much of the terminology is British in nature (e.g. calling an engine hood a 'bonnet'). But the content more than makes up for these UK colloquialisms. Even obscure makes, that were only built for 1 year, are mentioned here. The research is exhaustive........and it truly shows! No true motorcar enthusiast should be without this book as part of his/her prime collection and reference. I highly recommend this book to anyonw who wishes to understand the "wide breadth" or "intimate intricacjes" of automobile manufacturing, and how it developed down through the decades.
