This is a massive, sweeping overview of a very large subject. Several pages of well-reproduced B/W or color strips are devoted to each of the "big guns" in the cartoon world, from Richard Outcault ("Yellow Kid") to Will Eisner (The Spirit"). Many other lesser artists are represented by single pages or panels. But the sheer size of the field means, unfortunately, that a lot of other talented cartoonists who were famous in their day, such as TAD or T.S. Sullivant, get no mention at all. Still, the editor is the one making the choices, and in this case a massive, beautifully-produced survey of the field was the result.
