USUAL HISTORY--The animal is usually reported as having been for a long time "out of condition," unthrifty and backward. There have been attacks simulating rheumatism. CLINICAL ITEMS--Osteomalacia is a disease that is not quite clear from any standpoint. The generally accepted authorities are not even agreed upon the clinical picture that the disease should present in a typical form. The question as to whether rachitis, osteoporosis and osteomalacia are the same or different diseases has not been satisfactorily disposed of. The disease usually termed osteomalacia is a sectional disease. It occurs in certain localities with relative frequency, while in other localities a case of this disease is seldom seen. As the pathological evidence in this affection shows the lime constituent of the body to be far below normal, it is in regions where the same disparity exists in the soil that the disease is most frequently seen. Osteomalacia is a disease that develops very slowly and that runs a course of from a few months to a year, or more. The affected animal is at first unthrifty. While it eats well, it does not seem to derive much benefit from the food About at the same time it begins to appear to the observer that the animal is not quite as supple as it has always been. Although it is not yet aged, it is aging prematurely. Soon after this the appetite becomes indifferent. The patient seems to prefer inedible objects to chew and lick upon, leaving more or less of its usual ration untouched, and giving its attention to the gnawing and licking of walls, floors and other objects.
