I know Foote is a prolific writer, and his Civil War books are very popular. I found his writing style annoying and confusing. It is often difficult to determine who he is writing about. I'm going to try Bruce. Catton.

amongst the greats
Shelby foote is one of the finest hstorical writers I have read and this book, part one of a massive 3 volume 3000 page work is him at his best. His style is narrative and intimate. small patches of humour are never far from his accounts of what otherwise is a supremely sad part of world history. Altogether he was a brilliant historian and writer my only regret is that I only discovered him after his death. I would love to have known him.
A must for the serious student of the Civil war
