This coin indicates more than a mere alliance; it marks the two cities as conterminous, and united in the worship of the same goddess, whose name, as we learn from inscriptions, was MrjTrfp "ASpaa-oy. The connexion of Attouda with Aphrodisias was closer than with any other city. The same persons appear on the records of both cities (cp. App. II 9); the same names (e. g. Adrastos, Polychronios, Peritus &c.) and the same peculiar epigraphic formulae (see no. 70) are characteristic of both. Now commercially and geographically the natural relations of Attouda are with Laodiceia; and the numismatic facts just stated show that such a connexion existed3. The 1 Numism. Zft. 1884 p. 272.
