Excerpt from The Churchwardens' Accounts of St. Michael's in Bedwardine, Worcester: From 1539 to 1603, Transcribed and Edited for the Worcestershire Historical Society, With an Introduction Six Articles had been passed in this year, which declared that transubstantiation, communion in one kind, celibacy of the clergy, monastic vows, private masses, and the binding powers of vows of chastity, were agreeable to the law of God. Burning was the penalty fixed for the denial of transubstantiation, and for a second offence against either of the other five doctrines In 1547 a copy of this Act, then called a book of the six articles, cost the parishioners of St. Michael's 3d. In 1538 the royal license was given to Coverdale's translation of the Bible; and in 1540 Cranmer's Bible, known as the Great Bible, was appointed by royal command to be read in churches.
