The Church and the Culture of Modernity attempts to help the Catholic reader understand the fundamental disjuncture between the Church and what may be called the "culture of modernity", the secularist, anti-Christian, and anti-theist culture of the west, which has its roots in the apostasy of European civilization and ultimately in the decline of medieval scholasticism. Without any attempt to make Vatican II the "whipping boy" to a disgruntled traditionalist sensibility, the author wishes to explore the reasons why that Council failed to fully appreciate the disjuncture and what are the responsibility and the dangers facing the Church and the Catholic intellectual community in coming to terms with modernity in a salutary and effective way, given the Church's evangelical mission.
