And were the same stranger to go inside the church, he could but look with feelings of reverence on the Pastor, who, ascending the pulpit, addresses in such earnest tones that sea of uplifted faces, when he is told that it is Mr. F. Batsch, through whose instrumentality God has been pleased to permit so much to be accomplished." Such is the testimony of lay lookers-on. Such questions as the following are very often asked of Missionaries--and earnest Missionaries more often ask themselves--What is the inner life of the Mission? Are these men, who have been baptised, all sincere converts? Are the great body of native Christians striving to walk worthy of their high calling? The true answer, the best that can be expected, may be found in the description given by a Missionary himself of the Mission in 1865, which was doubtless as true in 1867: --"We must not be unjust towards the native Christians. We are all very prone to judge them severely, not considering the ignorance and depravity out of which they have so recently emerged: leniently forgetting that we ourselves have been in the abundance of grace and light for many generations. We certainly have amongst our people some who have not the knowledge of God, who are drunkards, liars, thieves, and impure persons; who, living in open sin, are not ashamed of their evil courses; and...
