It just so happens that when Junior was an acorn, he took root on the very day that an angelic host came to herald the birth of an infant in the nearby town of Bethlehem. "All night long the forest watched the star-like body drift slowly down from heaven," Green writes. "It glowed with the colors of a rainbow and from it emanated sounds never heard before on earth ... the voices sung of the coming of the savior." In fact, it wasn't a star but a host of angels proclaiming the birth of a king. "The Chosen Tree" deals with a special little tree that has a special relationship with a special child who would later give his life for the world. As a matter of fact, Junior, who grows into a great oak, gives his life, too. Their mutual love and sacrifice finally brings them together in a common purpose. Even though readers slowly realize that the inevitable, "The Chosen Tree" keeps them wondering about the Lord's -- and Junior's -- great sacrifice. Funny, it all plays out just as they knew it would.
