The word is derived from the Latin word fuga, a flight, from the fact that the parts seem to chase each other Two or more parts joined together by a brace, and thus representing the whole of the harmony, make what is called a Score. Scores are Short or Extended. A Short Score is that in which the whole of the parts are expressed in two staves: --For hymn-tunes, chants, and organ parts the short score is very convenient; but when the parts are complicated the extended score is most useful. In Extended Scores each part has a line to itself, and should be shown in the clef proper to the voice written for. There is no objection to the use of the treble clef for the alto voice, but when the same clef is employed, as it is very frequently, for the tenor voice, there is a great objection, as it does not represent the proper pitch, The subjoined specimens of scores for voices may be studied with interest: --Score For Three Voices. Bach. Treble. Alto. Tenor. Bass. His praise a-bove heav'n and earth. Score For Four Voices. Croft. tri-umph in the name of the Lord our God. tri-umphi in. the name of the.
