Yet from the very commencement, considerable ingenuity and immense labour have been expended by official writers attempting to prove that allodium, fee simple, copyhold, and even the feudal system generally, or at least their exact equivalents, must have had their home in Dravidam, or Tamil land, hundreds of years before these institutions were developed in Europe. Nothing but confusion, and the endless prolongation of fruitless discussion, can result from the pursuit of such an attempt. This has in fact been the actual result of trying to show what a thing is like, instead of plainly describing what it is. Menu's dictum concerning right in land is as follows: --" Cultivated land is the property of him who cuts away the wood, or who first cleared and tilled it."
