The first edition of this vanishingly scarce work, no record of this having sold previously at auction. Exploring the live of those living in China, this is an interesting study on the native of the country, and of foreigners who have settled there. In this work John Stuart Thomson provides an exploration of humour, politics, literature, art, climate, religion, and commerce in China, including a chapter on Japan's commercial example to China. Â Illustrated with a frontispiece, one double-paged colour map, two colour maps, and forty-six plates. Undated, dated from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with a damp stain to the head of the boards. Light rubbing to the spine and to the extremities. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine, lighter bumping to the extremities. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste down, and to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright with the occasional scattered spot. Good.
