Robert van Gulik is a unique writer. He extremely learned Dutch diplomat whose grasp of English, although sometimes rather Shakespearean, is far superior to most recent writers. But, aside from his intelligent plots and their denouements, he writes like a man of the world--which he was--and a man of excellent character. I cannot recommend his Judge Dee novels sufficiently.
