We had this book when we were kids. I had to find a copy for my son! It is a wonderful collection of stories that most SHOULD know (but might not), and some very creative and unique ones, too. Rip Van Winkle, the story of John Henry, The Tar Baby (Peter Rabbit)- just a few of the excellent stories within! Definitely one of my favorites!

The Childrens' Hour edited by Marjorie Barrows is a series of 16 hardcover books published in 1953 by Spencer Press in Chicago. My parents bought these books as they were published. Each volume has a different topical area, such as the Revolutionary War, the westward movement, outer space, fantasy & fairy tales, etc. Each book contains stories, poems & occasionally personal essays. I read & loved these as a child, from about age 7-14.. They are outdated by current standards. Many of the volumes, however, are historical or based on fairy tales, etc., so that the content can still be relevant. However, it is much different from some of the standard children's reading of today, such as the Babysitter's Club (if that's still around). This is good, healthy, non-controversial, clean reading. Could be good for reading aloud or for the child who loves to read and dream.
