Excerpt from The Chemical Gazette, or Journal of Practical Chemistry, in All Its Applications to Pharmacy, Arts and Manufactures, 1850, Vol. 8 Weight, grs. It was first digested in nitric acid. Efi'er vescence soon ceased, but the solution continued turbid from the presence of black powder. Hydrochloric acid was then added, and the digestion continued. The black powder was soon dissolved, and a bright green solution obtained. To this a slight excess of pot ash was added, and then sulphuret of potassium prepared extempore by boiling a solution of potash with flowers of sulphur. Digestion was continued during some hours, after which the precipitate was washed on a filter with water containing some sulphuret of potus sium. The filtrate was digested with excess of hydrochloric acid until the excess of sulphur had completely subsided, reduced by evaporation and filtered; chloride of magnesium and excess of um monia were then added. After standing about forty-eight hours, the precipitate was washed with cold water containing ammonia. It was redissolved by hydrochloric acid, and again precipitated as before. After standing more than twenty-four hours, it was filtered and washed with cold water containing ammonia. By ignition, gr. Of phosphate of magnesia was obtained, which is equivalent to per cent. Of phosphorus. The precipitate obtained by sulphuret of potassium was digested with nitric acid; from the solution, diluted and filtered, the copper was precipitated by hs. The sulphuret of copper was digested with nitric acid, and then evaporated to dryness after the addition of an excess of sulphuric acid. The copper was precipitated by potash. By ignition, 2547 grs. Of oxide of copper (cuq) were obtained, which are equivalent to per cent. Of metallic copper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
