With a focus on the creation and evolution of the pre-eminent problem-solving international organizations, the book seeks to offer an understanding of the contemporary governmental challenges they confront from both domestic and transnational constituencies. It also considers major, yet less formal, arrangements that have operated alongside them and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that facilitate the work of international organizations. Individual chapters address the historical context for multilateralism prior to World War I, the interwar period, and after World War II, as well as global and regional security, trade, finance, the environment, global health, the European Union, and global justice.
