Excerpt from The Catholic Revival of the Nineteenth Century: A Brief Popular Account of Its Origin, History, Literature, and General Results; Six Lectures The evil that men do lives after them, The good is oft interred with their bones.' In great political and ecclesiastical movements the position is often reversed. Evils frequently die with the movements that give them birth posterity enjoys their benefits. And in England the disastrous consequences of the Reformation were less Obvious and less lasting than on the Continent. Our insular position, and the natural conservatism of English character, though not preventing the Reformation from taking effect here, exercised upon it a restraining influence which was not felt to the same extent in Germany. Here two forces were simultaneously at work; there was a desire for reform, but there was also that reverence for ancient landmarks which has always been displayed during the great crises of English history. It is to this reforming, though conservative, spirit, this co-existence and combina tion of apparently opposing, though not really inconsistent, forces, that we owe the peculiar character of our Book of Common Prayer. It obviously represents and provides for two different schools of thought; one in such parts as the thirty-nine Articles (or the popular interpretation thereof), and other productions of the Renaissance period the other in those stately forms and creeds which have been retained from earlier times.
