As with much of my reading, I found this book, "The Cat who Went to Heaven" on display in the local public library. Written in 1930 by Elizabeth Coatsworth (1893 -- 1986) the book received the Newberry Medal in 1931 for the most distinguished American children's book of the previous year. The book has been reprinted many times. In 1967, a new edition of the book was published with illustrations by Lynd Ward (1895 -- 1985), a distinguished novelist and illustrator in his own right. This was the edition I found in the library, although the book has been reissued several times since then.
I was interested in this book because I love cats and because I have studied Buddhism. It was fascinating to find an American children's book from 1930 with Buddhism as a theme. In addition, for many years, a publisher of children's books with spiritual and religious themes from around the world has sent me books to review. "The Cat who Went to Heaven" ties in with other literature with spiritual themes for children that I have read.
Set in ancient Japan, the book has three main characters, a gifted but poor young artist, his elderly housekeeper, and a mysterious calico cat the housekeeper brings home that she names Good Fortune. And the cat seems to bring good fortune when the village priest comes to the home and informs the artist that he has been selected to create a large painting of the death of the Buddha to adorn the temple.
The story shows the response of the artist, the housekeeper, and Good Fortune to the commission. The none--too-religious artist immerses himself in the story of the Buddha to create his painting. This gives the author the opportunity to weave in stories of the Buddha's life and teachings into her book. She draws heavily on a Buddhist work called the Jakata Tales which tells the story of the Buddha's prior lives when he was on earth as one or another animal, such as a deer, elephant, or buffalo. Slowly, the artist creates a deeply felt painting. The housekeeper sings a series of eight songs over the course of the painter's work, feeds him and takes care of the house, and watches Good Fortune. The cat seems deeply involved with the artist and with the painting. In Buddhist legend, the cat was the only animal too proud to attend the Buddha's funeral and thus was barred from entering heaven (or Nirvana).
In "The Cat who went to Heaven", Elizabeth Coatsworth told a lovely, profound story in its journey and in its resolution. It is a story that will teach both young and older readers something about Buddhism and about broader spiritual issues. The book is best suited for children ten years of age and older. The book deserves its reputation as a children's classic. I had not known of this little book before, and was fortunate to find and read it.

Great Book
This is a great book for those who love cats. This book gives hope for people to believe that their cat could go to heaven. I think this would be an inspiration to all cat owners.

Beautiful Book
I loved this book dearly. It is about a
Japanese Monk in Japan who is painting
a picture of all kinds of animals. He has
a pet cat who keeps asking him why
she cannot be in the picture. She pleads
with him until he finally agrees. It is
very sad and joyful at the same time. I
purchased two more of this book for my
daughter and a friend, Emily who adored
it.
