This is the kind of book I just want to hand out copies of to friends.
Rather than follow a protagonist this book follows the story where it needs to go. Each chapter is an almost stand alone short story with tiny plot links to the previous chapters.
When I was told this I was nearly put off, but it has to be said each chapter is a compelling short story with a compelling protagonist.
It should be complicated, but it's easy to follow.
It's almost like the author points a camera at one tiny person living their tiny life on a planet and as the book goes on the camera slowly pulls out until you have an entire picture of the planet.
I have recently joined a science fiction book club and this was where I discovered "The Carpet Makers". Out of about 16 people, 13 thought it was amazing. The other 3 were not blown away but thought it was a good read worth reading. That's a pretty good result.
This is a book I will read again.

A Brilliant Critique of Absolute Power
This novel could replace _1984_ in my syllabus as a creative yet chilling examination of the potential abuses of power. A mystifying premise is introduced: a culture of carpet-makers devotes entire lifetimes to making carpets of human hair for an unseen ruler. But why? Eschbach carefully broadens the scope until the mystery is revealed through cooperation between old and new regimes. I can't wait for more from this talented new discovery.
