Travel back in time
Irfan Orga, author of PORTRAIT OF A TURKISH FAMILY, spends several weeks with the Yuruk nomads in the mountains of central Turkey. Descended from the Seljuks, these nomads are dwelling in tents and living lives that would probably feel very familiar to their ancestors of a thousand or more years ago. Orga describes finding the "free" lives of the Yuruk mightily appealing on an emotional level, and then equally appalling as he learns of their self-chaining social taboos. I found this to be a fascinating book, along with his PORTRAIT OF A TURKISH FAMILY.
