In the following year Torring ton allowed a French eet under De Tourville to snatch a victory from the combined English and Dutch eets off Beachy Head. The Hollanders, who led the van, fought with signal bravery, as did some of the English, ships but others seemed to Shirk the contest. In this action the English lost a couple of vessels, two of their captains, and some four hundred men; while the Dutch lost two Ad mirals, with a large number of men, and were be sides obliged to Sink several of their vessels to prevent them falling into the enemy's hands. Both commanders were blamed, Torrington for not fight ing, the French Admiral for not following up his Victory, which, indeed, from his failure to do so, profited the victors but little.
