"The Bronx in the Frontier Era: From the Beginning to 1696" is the first thoroughly researched in-depth account of the development of New York City's northernmost borough in the dynamic years of its first settlement by Europeans. Written by a professor of history at Farleigh Dickinson University, it is projected as the first in a series of volumes telling the rich & varied story of the development of the Bronx. From the beginning, the area attracted people of wide ethnic diversity. While individual incidents of animosity are recorded in that rough & tumble frontier society, each group rapidly learned to reside together peacefully. Rather, tensions rose over land boundaries & the extent of political jurisdiction. Overall, the underlying leitmotif is a struggle between people living in a raw area trying to maintain freedom of action & local advantage on one side against the powerful forces generated by colonial & European authorities on the other. Leisler's Rebellion in 1688 led to the ending of the Frontier Era & the onset of a period of privilege. The rich detailed narrative & insightful interpretations of these events, placing them in the stream of American history is accompanied by illustrations, notes & bibliography.
