His Serene Majesty Joao iv. of Portugal was dead, and his son Affonso vi. reigned in his stead. Through the narrow tortuous streets, down the breakneck alleys of the upper town, the people, wide-hatted and long-cloaked, flocked towards the old palace by the Tagus to see the new King enthroned. In the square now called the Praca do Commercio, the throne was reared upon a platform, richly hung, running north and south; around it were gathered the prelates and great ones of the land. The crown of Portugal was a doubtful heritage: the struggle for freedom against Spain was not yet decided, and Spanish armies beset every frontier. The country needed a wise head and a strong arm; instead, the chances of hereditary succession had placed over it a lad but thirteen years of age. A sickly lad, too; who, it was whispered, had never completely recovered from the effects of the fever that attacked him in his sixth year, and was even believed to be paralysed in one half of his body. Men thought regretfully of his elder brother, Theodosio, who had died in the flower of his youth, three years before; some weighed the chances of his younger brother, his mother's favourite. To the flourish of trumpets the withered little King paced forth from the palace, and stood before his lieges. He was, when the worst had been said, a pleasant-looking boy--fair-skinned, blue-eyed, and golden-haired, with regular features and upright carriage. And for all his infirmity, he looked brave enough in his royal robes.
