Jamie & Alec
The youngest wildchild of a Baron is chosen to be bride to a Scottish laird. While it is her father's intent to hide her when the two grooms show up to select two brides from his four daughters, he has no intention of giving up his Jamie. After all, she is the one that provides for the family, protects the family and does all the work in the family. However, a trusted stablemaster has other plans. He sees the Lairds first and is determined to cut Jamie free of the slavery in the home. Since the Lairds have a peek of Jamie - there is no denying her by the father. The lairds make their selections - Jamie and her sister Mary. Mary is a gentle bred lass and Jamie (while also gentle bred) has worked hard all her life and taught many manly skills by the stablemaster who took her under his wing. The marriage is completed and they set back to Scottland. Along the way, they are set upon by thieves. She gets a chance to see her husband in action and he her. He still believes she is unskilled and soft like a woman. Just that her callosus are due to working around her keep. She has many skills - but does not want him to know all of them at first. They get back to his keep - her sister off with her husband to a neighboring keep. There is unrest in the keep as no one wants her there and there are plots to take her life by those who have been trying for years to get at Alec. Her first act of kindness is saving a man that last rites were read to. She manages to save the man's life - much to everyones amazement as she does have a great deal of healing knowledge. Her healing abilities become renowned and people want her to heal them. This starts one of the many wars her clan may become embroilled in. By saving a baby, she starts a war with the clan Laird. She near starts a war with her brother-in-law when she provides santuary to her sister. She starts another war or possibly two when she saves a child (Alec's daughter from his first wife - well, his first wife's daughter so his step daughter) by kidnapping her from where she stays and has been mistreated. Now those people and the former wive's clan are possibly after war. She starts another when a party is attended by a neighboring clan and is subject to unwanted advances. She is set upon several times by a person wishing her murdered. All the while she uses her strength to bound back and to move forward. The final war may be with her own people. Her father has accepted a dowery for her and the Englishman who she was promised to comes to claim her. This face off is the final in the book and it forces an end that is a bit surprising as it manages to settle many wars all at once. Good read.
