Drawing upon but 12 moments from a career spanning more than three decades, Brazilian Collection is one of those hopelessly simplified retrospectives that cannot hope to represent a clear, much less complete picture of Brazilian MPB star Chico Buarque's extensive contributions to that country's rich popular music landscape. On hand here are examples of his well-known work in bossa nova ("Atras da Porta," "Gota D'Agua"), samba ("Vai Passar," "Apesar de Voce"), and pop balladry both lush (the wistful "Bye, Bye Brasil") and sparse ("Trocando em Miudos") as well as his less typical foray into chorinho with the absolute classic "Meu Caro Amigo." But although these certainly manage to display Buarque's considerable stylistic reach in under an hour's time, one can't help but feel some disappointment over the lost historical context necessary to support them. Still, getting a taste of these timeless hits is almost guaranteed to whet new listeners' appetites for further discovery, so in that sense at least its existence is justified. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi
