This is a simple story of a young man's path to enlightenment and adulthood. Jake's family has moved from Ohio to a college town in Kansas. The parents find new career opportunities, but Jake is unhappy with his new life. Then his parents inadvertently abandon him. He is forced to survive on his own. Along the way to maturity he makes new friends, meets his future wife, and is befriended by a pair of Scrabble-playing senior citizens. He gains an appreciation for solitude and finds joy in reading great literature. He accidently learns a little about sewage treatment and is introduced to epistemology by a combat veteran who owns a grocery store. Above all he gains peace and contentment. His adventure will be especially appreciated by those who never really liked The Catcher in the Rye.
