The Bouvier des Flandres is a breed of herding dog that originates from Flanders, in Belgium. The breed is also commonly known as the 'Flanders Cattle Dog' as well as being known by the breed's literal French translation of 'Cow Herder of Flanders.' The breed was traditionally used for general farm work including cattle herding, sheep herding, cart pulling and animal droving. Traditionally the Bouvier des Flandres had its tail docked and its ears cropped. It is believed that the owner's would have done this to indicate that the Bouvier des Flandres is a working dog, rather than a pet, which means that it would not be subject to pet taxations. It is also thought that the ear cropping and tail docking was an attempt to avoid the dog injuring itself while it works. The breed nearly went extinct during World War 1 due to the devastation that occurred across the region of Flanders. A male trained trench dog, named Nic, who served during World War 1 was awarded a multiple titles at dog shows after the war and is considered the founder of the Bouvier des Flandres breed.
