I started learning Latin this year in school, and my Latin book instructed me to get a book from my library that taught me about the Ancient Romans. "Oh great," I thought sarcastically. My sarcasm was due to the fact that every Ancient Romans book I had ever read had only stuff about how bad their dictators were; how they basically broke every single one of the Ten Commandments, and worst of all, the authors of this book went into full detail about it. Blah! So this was not an exciting thing for me. But when I went to my library, I found this book, and I said, "Hey! I'll give it a shot." It turned out it was an excellent book, is great at explaining things, it catches your attention, and the chapters aren't long and dull. I absolutely adore this book, and it gives me all the info I need to go along with my Latin studies. Rome is vitally important to the way we live our lives today, as the ancient Romans went the extra stride to cultivate their own people in a different way. They modernized a lot of things, and though some of the Ancient Romans disgust me, I can honestly say that they were very important. Dorothy Mills makes you see this in her book, and without the awful details that make you shiver, she gives you the information that connects places, people, and things, as well as really paying attention to the real history. She really gives you a sense of Romes politics, history, literature and its beautiful art. Her understanding of this people will really astound you as she passes that wisdom right on to you.
