From renowned NPR commentator Andrei Codrescu comes a novel of obsession and dark sexuality based on the real-life Countess Elizabeth Bathory, whose cruelty and debauchery rivaled that of the Marquis de Sade. An astonishing work of historical fiction that interweaves the bloody exploits of the legendary countess with the story of Drake, a modern newpaperman born into the Bathory line unaware of his chilling heritage--a man who discovers that he has more in common with Elizabeth Bathory than blood ties alone.

Strangely, this is Codrescu's only work of fiction that I can find. Certainly, it's his only non-comedic work and it excels. The reader is transported back and forth between the (then) present and medieval Hungary, a time when the ruling class did as they pleased with almost absolute impunity. While this book is definitely not for the faint of heart it is also not gory for its own sake. As far as I can find it has been out of print for some 15 years or more but is worth tracking down.

Super
The best Bathory book ever written. The author knows his history. The modern day storyline is sort of dull compared with the flash back part. The sections on the young countess are a real page turner. The story manages to put a human face on a historical monster.
