Cookson is a prolific writer, and this book moved me as it was meant to. The tides between her characters makes her worth spending the time it takes to read and recover from the depth of emotions. The velvet gown is handled as the symbol of all that is yearned for, but the outcome is one of justice in the end. Her characters are believable and some lovely, some not so lovely. One can see why she is a writer of classic novels.

If I could give this book a ten star rating I truly would. It get s you caught up in the story almost with the first sentence and goes from there. Trul;y a beautiful story. And I wonder just where Catherine comes up with so many original and fascinating characters. Would love to meet someone like them in real life. Goodness oozes out of the most of them, but there is always a villian, much like real life.
