The Black Hills was the last sector of South Dakota to become settled because it was closed "Indian Country" until gold was discovered there. The events that led to opening the region to white settlement remain controversial to this day. It wasn't until recent years that the dispute reached the United States Supreme Court. It ruled that the Black Hills had been illegally taken from the Sioux and Congress appropriated the funds to reimburse them for the loss. So far the Sioux have refused the money, despite their desperate need for it, and have pushed for return of at least part of their beloved region to them. What the outcome will be remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Bob Lee hopes that readers of this pictorial history book will come to understand why both the Sioux and the whites value the region so highly. The fascinating history of the Black Hills has been Lee's principal field of interest for over a half a century. Many interesting characters have figured prominently in the development of what has become South Dakota's most popular playground. This book is an introduction to the area's history and the photographs Lee has gathered in all six counties of the Black Hills reflect the changes that have occurred there over the years. They should inspire those readers not lucky enough to live in this delightful area to visit it and evaluate its many wonders for themselves.
